Evaluating a job offer

Base salary is important, but a good decision also considers hours, overtime, commute, learning, stability and the actual scope of the role.

Compare total employment value

Look at base pay, guaranteed and discretionary components, overtime treatment, KiwiSaver arrangements, leave, equipment, travel, allowances and flexibility. Confirm what is written in the agreement rather than relying on assumptions.

Price the commute

A role that looks better on salary can feel worse if it adds substantial travel time, parking expense or unpredictable site work. Compare the weekly routine, not only the annual number.

Consider future evidence

Ask what you will be able to say you built, improved, led or learned after a year. A role with strong technical ownership or exposure to good systems can have career value beyond its immediate pay.

Negotiate with evidence

Use the role scope, your relevant experience and market information to explain your position. Avoid bluffing. If you have another offer, describe it accurately rather than inventing leverage.
